Welcome to Shanwell Wildlife Rescue Trust

Shanwell Wildlife Rescue Trust (SWRT), was established in 2004 in Broughty Ferry, Dundee on the North East of Scotland to provide a frontline rescue and treatment service for injured wild animals.

As Tayside's only dedicated volunteer wildlife rescue service we currently operate  our wildlife care unit and a fully equipped wildlife rescue ambulance.

Our aim is to heal every animal capable of surviving its injuries and return it back to its natural environment, while giving those who will not survive, a comfortable and dignified death.

Shanwell Wildlife Rescue Trust is operated by volunteers who do not receive payment for their services, our common commitment is for the welfare of wildlife and the environments in which they live.

If you wish to report a sick, injured or orphaned wild animal please click onto our EMERGENCY HELP page where you will find useful contact numbers for the whole of Scotland.

These fox cubs in this video were orphaned when their mother was knocked down and killed by a car. Upon arrival at the accident we noticed that the vixen was lactating. After making some enquiries we identified where the earth with the cubs was located.  After an assessment we decided that the cubs were old enough to be left in the earth and that we would visit daily to check on their welfare and to bring over support feeding such as rabbit, pheasant, deer etc which we would recover from road traffic accidents. Our volunteers and some local residents visted the cubs for eight weeks and we were so pleased to see them grow and eventually leave the safety of the earth to hunt and forage for themselves.

SWRT CARE POLICY

All animals that come into our care will be examined by a veterinary surgeon as necessary.
Our aim is to return every animal that is capable of surviving back into its natural environment. If the animal's injuries are so severe that it would be unable ever to lead a normal life back in the wild, we will allow any such animals the dignity of a peaceful and pain free death in a warm and comfortable environment. It is the Trust's policy that we do not believe that it is right to keep a wild-bred animal in captivity.

SWRT WILDLIFE CARE UNIT

At our wildlife care unit in Dundee we provide immediate aid and short term hospitalisation for seals, foxes, hedgehogs, bats, birds of prey, owls and other birds, small mammals, and reptiles.

WILDLIFE AMBULANCE RESPONSE

Our wildlife ambulance is a familiar site throughout Tayside & North Fife. Unfortunatly due to serious funding difficulties we are currently limited to providing a night duty response service  answering calls for assistance from veterinary surgeons, police, fire & rescue, countryside rangers, members of the public and other animal welfare organisations to rescue sick & injured swans, foxes, badgers, birds, reptiles and mammals.

Please note our ambulance response service is subject to volunteer availability, weather conditions and vehicle breakdown.

WILDLIFE CRIME PREVENTION

Shanwell Wildlife Rescue Trust is an active participant in the the Partnership for Action Against Wildlife Crime (PAW) which brings together the police, HM revenue & customs, and representatives of government departments and voluntary bodies, with an interest in wildlife law enforcement.

This video shows the final leg of a Striped dolphin rescue which we managed to rescue after it became stranded in a pool at Moncrieffe island on the Tay at Perth.  This rescue which lasted eight hours saw a multi agency rescue from Shanwell Wildlife Rescue, Tayside Fire & Rescue, SSPCA, BDMLR, RNLI Broughty Ferry and Tayside Police.

PLEASE HELP US TO CONTINUE TO HELP WILDLIFE

As you can imagine the costs involved with running Shanwell Wildlife Rescue and caring for sick and injured animals is very expensive. Our volunteers are dedicated, but the costs of animal foods and medicines and the upkeep of our centre and rescue ambulance is extremely high.

As a charity which does not receive any government or local authority funding we are dependant upon financial donations from the public and local businesses to help us continue to provide our services.

With YOUR support, Shanwell Wildlife Rescue will continue to help sick wild animals.

If you feel that you would like to support us please consider making a donation.
